Spoiler season is my favorite time of year. The allure of new shiny cards is too much for me to resist. I am like a kid on Christmas, but Christmas comes 4 times a year. Yesterday, Wizards spoiled this gem.

This card is crrraaazzzzzyyyyy.

Okay, for actual analysis. Just to clarify some things, As Foretold can cast any type of card as long as it is cheap enough. It also says “Each turn” which allows you to cast Instants or spells with flash on your opponent’s turn. The other bit of rules knowledge is that this can cast suspend cards like Ancestral Vision, Restore Balance, Living End and Lotus Bloom.

It casts spells for free. It is blue.

I can work with this.

Let me show you a deck that former Mindcrank Cohost Max Brown and I came up with that illustrates the power of As Foretold.

As Foretold ComboConnor Bryant Emrakul, the Aeons Torn Scalding Tarn Temple of Epiphany Mountain Island Steam Vents Ancestral Vision Blood Moon Clockspinning Cryptic Command Lotus Bloom Manamorphose Remand Serum Visions Unsubstantiate Wheel of Fate As Foretold

The deck is set up to find As Foretold and churn through its deck. The deck has ridiculous amounts of card draw with Wheel of Fate, Ancestral Vision, Serum Visions, Remand and Cryptic Command. The hope is to cast the free suspends card with As Foretold and find more free spells to cast off of it while slowing the opponent down with Cryptic Commands, Unsubstantiates and Remands. We don’t mind bouncing cards to their hands if we Wheel of Fate them away. Blood Moon is here as a potential haymaker. Clockspinning, a forgotten gem from Time Spiral, can speed up our suspended cards if we don’t have a As Foretold or add a time counter to As Foretold and ramp it up. Emrakul, the Aeons Torn is our eventual win condition by either casting with As Foretold eventually or off of Lotus Blooms. It also lets us recycle the Wheel of Fates and Ancestral Vision and eventually deck our opponent while we keep recycling with Emrakul. The deck can start drawing cards as early as turn 2 with a Simian Spirit Guide. I don’t have a sideboard laid out yet but I like boarding in creatures like Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir and Vendillion Clique as threats when they board out their removal spells and give the deck a way to protect As Foretold. They also have flash, which is great with As Foretold.

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what As Foretold is capable of. The card is insanely powerful in Modern and could become a pillar of the format. It may just take some time to find the right home, but we get a time counter every upkeep so get out there and brew to break this card.
