Searching Standard: Umbreon EX

Hello and welcome to another episode of Searching Standard, where each and every week I look for new, innovative decks for you to play in Standard. This week, I'm looking at a deck that was recently featured on the YouTube channel of LittleDarkFury. It features Umbreon ex PRE 60, a Pokemon with a very unique attack you can use to finish off your opponent. Let's get started by taking a look at the deck list.

By using Umbreon ex PRE 60's Onyx attack, you can simply take one of your Prize cards. Using this attack requires you to discard all Energy attached to Umbreon ex PRE 60 and doesn't deal any damage to your opponent's Active pokemon, but it can be a great way to take your last remaining Prize card with ease. Umbreon ex PRE 60 also has the Moon Mirage attack that you can use, dealing 160 damage to your opponent's Active Pokemon and leaving them Confused. This deck also includes a single Jolteon ex PRE 30 that you can use as an attacker. With its Flashing Spear attack, you'll be able to deal up to 240 damage, which is enough to Knock Out most opposing Pokemon.

Another possible attacker is Blissey ex TWM 134. Its Return attack deals 180 damage and helps refill your hand to six cards. Perhaps more importantly, though, Blissey ex TWM 134 has the Happy Switch Ability, which allows you to move a Basic Energy from one of your Pokemon to a different Pokemon, once per turn. This can be a very helpful way of powering up Umbreon ex PRE 60's Onyx attack.

Since this deck is already running Darkness Energy, including a pair of Munkidori TWM 95 is a no-brainer. By using its Adrena-Brain Ability, you can move up to 3 damage counters from one of your Pokemon to one of your opponent's Pokemon each turn. Keeping your team healthy while adding damage to your opponent's team makes this Pokemon a great asset.

Helping keep Umbreon ex PRE 60's Onyx attack powered up is this next batch of Trainer cards. Powerglass SFA 63 can be attached to return an Energy card from your discard pile to Umbreon ex PRE 60 at the end of the turn. Glass Trumpet PRE 110 allows you to attach up to 2 Basic Energy cards to a pair of your Benched Colorless Type pokemon, which can then be moved via the use of Blissey ex TWM 134's Happy Switch Ability. Finally, the Turbo Energize attack that Technical Machine: Turbo Energize PAR 179 helps you find any 2 Basic Energy cards to attach to your Benched Pokemon as you'd like. All of these can help you use Umbreon ex PRE 60's Onyx attack multiple times during a game.

A final Item to help you find the Energy you need is Earthen Vessel PAR 163. There's only one copy of it in this deck, but one is all you need to get things started with this deck.

This batch of Trainer cards all help you find the Basic Pokemon you'll need. Precious Trolley SSP 185 is the ACE SPEC for the deck, which allows you to put any number of Basic Pokemon from your deck onto your Bench. Nest Ball SVI 181 does the exact same thing, but you can only search for one Basic Pokemon with it. There's also a copy of Artazon PAL 171 that can benefit both you and your opponent.

Ultra Ball SVI 196 is the Item of choice to find any non-Basic Pokemon you need. You'll have to discard two cards from your hand in order to play Ultra Ball SVI 196, but the ability to find any Pokemon from within your deck is worth that price.

When you play Arven SVI 166, you can search your deck for any Item and any Pokemon Tool to put into your hand. He will really help ensure you have what you need to succeed. Boss’s Orders PAL 172 can be played to make taking Prize cards easier. When you play it, move a Pokemon you're sure to Knock Out into your opponent's Active Spot. It's even better when that pokemon provides you with multiple Prize cards when it gets Knocked Out. The lone copy of Cheren's Care BRS 134 can help keep you ahead in the Prize race. Playing it allows you to put a Colorless Type Pokemon and all attached cards into your hand. By doing this, you can prevent your opponent from Knocking Out that Pokemon and deny them the chance of taking any Prize cards.

Drawing extra cards is vital to winning, and no Supporter allows you more unconditional drawing power than Professor's Research PRE 122. Just make sure you've played anything in your hand before playing Professor's Research PRE 122, since you'll have to discard any remaining cards in your hand in order to draw the seven new cards. Iono PAF 80 also offers some amount of card drawing, but she also resets your opponent's hand, and possibly any momentum they had. As you've just seen, this deck has a bunch of amazing Supporter cards, and playing Pokégear 3.0 SVI 186 can be a great way to find a Supporter you need.

The final batch of Trainer cards are generally all-purpose cards you might find helpful. Night Stretcher SFA 61 offers a way to reuse something that has gone to your discard pile. Rigid Band MEW 165 offers a Stage 1 Pokemon a bit of defense, allowing that Pokemon to take 30 less damage from attacks. Finally, Switch SVI 194 offers you some mobility, letting you swap a powered up Pokemon into your Active Spot without needing to discard any Energy to Retreat.

Wrapping Up

While Umbreon ex PRE 60 might not be the best Tera Eevee-lution, it can be quite fun to play. Having an attack that simply allows you to take a Prize card can allow you to end games quickly. It offers a chance of winning against decks that have far superior attacking power. If that sounds like fun to you, you should give this deck a try.

What do you think of this deck? Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Let me know by leaving a comment below. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in the Pokemon TCG. I'll see you then!
