Searching Standard: Mega Venusaur ex

Hello and welcome to another episode of Searching Standard, where each and every week I look for new, innovative decks for you to play in Standard. This week, I'm looking at a deck that was recently featured on the YouTube channel of LittleDarkFury. It features Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3, who can quickly decimate an opposing team with a little help from its friends. Let's get started by taking a look at the deck list.

Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3 is the main attacker for this deck, and by using its Jungle Dump attack, you'll deal a whopping 240 damage to your opponent's Active Pokemon while healing 30 damage from Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3. While this attack requires 4 Grass Energy to use, this requirement is made easier with the help of Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3's Solar Transfer Ability. This Ability allows you to move any amount of Basic Grass Energy from one of your Pokemon to another.

Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3 also gets quite a bit of help from Meganium MEG 10's Wild Growth Ability, which makes each Basic Grass Energy attached to any of your Pokemon count as 2 Grass Energies instead. While you can only benefit from this Ability once (it doesn't stack), that should be good enough to make even the most costly attacks affordable.

Teal Mask Ogerpon ex TWM 25 also helps out with Energy for the team with its Teal Dance Ability. This allows you to attach a Basic Grass Energy from your hand to itself once per turn. If you do this, you also get to draw a card. Using this Ability doesn't count as your limit of attaching 1 Energy card per turn, so you can really accelerate your Energy by doing this. Both Teal Mask Ogerpon ex TWM 25 and Mew ex MEW 151 are great backup attackers, as well. Plus, Mew ex MEW 151 has the Restart Ability, offering you a bit of card drawing power.

Fezandipiti ex SFA 38 is included primarily for the use of its Flip the Script Ability, which can help you recover after suffering a Knock Out. However, it also has the Cruel Arrow attack which can easily be used. This attack can be a great way of picking off a wounded Pokemon that is on your opponent's Bench. Toedscruel PAR 17 is included thanks to its Slime Mold Colony Ability which prevents your opponent from putting any cards from their discard pile into their hand with the effect of an Ability or a Trainer card. This Ability can cripple certain decks.

You'll want to get your Evolved Pokemon into play as quickly as possible, and Forest of Vitality MEG 117 is sure to help with that. The quicker you Evolve, the faster you'll be able to attack for huge amounts of damage. Bug Catching Set PRE 102 can be played to help you find the Pokemon and Energy cards you need more quickly. There's also Secret Box TWM 163 as the ACE SPEC card for this deck, which can help you find anything you might need.

When you have 6 remaining Prize cards, Lillie's Determination MEG 119 is the best Supporter to play when you need better options for the cards in your hand. Even after you've taken a Prize or two, she's really good at refreshing your options and giving you a handful of new cards. Professor's Research PRE 123 is still another great option for when you need new cards. Drawing 7 new cards is always nice, even if you need to discard your current hand of cards to do so. Then you have Iono PAL 185, who can also be used to draw you a new hand of cards, however her primary role is to disrupt your opponent's hand and current plans and slow down their momentum by replacing their hand with all new cards (and hopefully fewer cards than they had).

Both Nest Ball PAF 84 and Ultra Ball MEG 131 help you find the Pokemon you need from within your deck. Don't forget to take a peek at the other cards that are in your deck when you search for a Pokemon with either of these cards, as you might be able to figure out whether or not anything vital is trapped within your Prize card pool.

Boss’s Orders PAL 172 is the go-to choice when you need to attack a different Pokemon other than your opponent's Active Pokemon. Wally's Compassion MEG 132 will completely heal one of your Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3 in play, for the low, low price of putting any Energy attached to that Pokemon back into your hand. Alternatively, move that Energy away with Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3's Solar Transfer Ability, play Wally's Compassion MEG 132, and then move the Energy right back.

Both Earthen Vessel PAR 163 and Pokégear 3.0 BLK 84 let you search your deck for specific things. Earthen Vessel PAR 163 can help you find up to 2 Basic Energy cards, while Pokégear 3.0 BLK 84 lets you search the top 7 cards of your deck for a Supporter to put into your hand. This is a great way to search for Wally's Compassion MEG 132 if you need one.

The final pair of cards (Night Stretcher SFA 61 and Super Rod PAL 188) allow you to reuse certain cards that have gone to your discard pile. Whether the card(s) you get go to your hand or into your deck, being able to get an additional use out of a Pokemon or Basic Energy card can be quite helpful.

Wrapping Up

Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3 is quite a beast. With a big attack that can Knock Out a number of other Pokemon (while healing itself in the process), Mega Venusaur ex MEG 3 would be much more difficult to utilize without the help of its friend, Meganium MEG 10. This duo will likely be seen together in Standard play for quite a while.

What do you think of this deck? Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Let me know by leaving a comment below. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in the Pokemon TCG. I'll see you then!
