Welcome to my weekly comic book oriented article here at Flipside Gaming. Last week the Superior Octopus made his presence known while X-23 found the Edge of Venomverse. This week we get to see the X-mansion open to the public and Thor is hoping the next leap is the leap home.  Excelsior!

Reviews

The Amazing Spider-Man #29

I might take heat on this take, but I think Otto Octavius Spider-Man’s true arch-nemesis. Superior Spider-man was one of the greatest Spider-Man runs of all time and this issue is less about Secret Empire and more about the rebirth of the Superior Octupus. I very excited to see this new take on such a classic villain that I am moving this to the top of my buy lists.

Edge of Venomverse #1

There was no Venom-Gwen in this issue. To be fair, I think that would have been a bit ambitious and it is what everyone was expecting. I think the X-23 Venom was very cool and the appearance of a Captain America Venom has me intrigued. I will be surprised if this tops Spiderverse but it is still such a neat concept that I am glad they are doing this book.

Secret Empire #5

If you are going to go out and make Steve Rogers the ultimate villain, you might as well through haymakers all through the event. The Bruce Banner cameo at the end of this issue is all anyone should be talking about. It is the first sign that maybe there will not be any cosmic cube shenanigans when it comes to bringing back heroes that have fallen and just good old-fashioned comic book magic. We are half way through the event and I think that it is trending up.

X-Men Blue #6

This was more of a character book than a storyline book. You have some bonding scenes between Cyclops and Magneto as well as Beast, Jean Grey, and Jimmy Hudson. The appearance of Madripoor Ninjas and a group of heroes taking up Wolverine’s mantle led to some interesting moments. Let’s be honest though, the best moment was when Jean wanted to help teach these new mutants how to be heroes in exchange for being taught how to be a ninja.

X-Men Gold #7

We are in the middle of Secret Empire and it feels like just now all the tie-in books are rolling out. With the mansion being in the middle of Manhattan, it has become a haven for everyone looking to survive. In the spirit of bringing back classic X-men characters, the X-Cutioner is appearing which means even more trouble for the people trapped in the dark dimension.

Avengers #9

I am not quite sure where this tie-in to Secret Empire is in the timeline. The last time I remember seeing Thor was when Volstagg became the War Thor. I do not remember Jane Foster getting lost in time and leaping through time, trying to put right what once went wrong (What?! Didn’t think I would not get a Quantum Leap reference in this week, did you?). I have generally enjoyed Secret Empire so I look forward to more of the books that fill in the gaps.

Champions #10

The Champions have been put into an interesting position in recent weeks. They are a young group of heroes, yet Black Widow is taking them to some dark places to topple Hydra. It will be interesting to see what the long-term effects this whole situation has the young heroes, that is if the status quo changes and reality doesn’t change after Secret Empire.

Spider/Deadpool #19

I thought that with Itsy-Bitsy defeated the book was over. Apparently, I was wrong, so be thankful for that! A storyline called “No More Jokes” has better be good and if the preview that put emphasis on “Slapstick” is an indication we are getting a new villain. So we have gone from Itsy-Bitsy to potentially Slapstick, ok, I am willing to fully buy-in on the silliness.

Thanks for reading! Don't forget to stop in any Flipside Gaming in East Greenbush to pick up or reserve your copies of these titles today!
